FILM SCREENING: VERONICA 4 ROSE (1982) : Women Artists of the North East Library

Workplace Foundation, Gateshead 21 August 2018

Selected by Holly Argent from Cinenova’s Archive as part of the public programme for Women Artists of the North East Library at Workplace… Veronica 4 Rose follows the lives of 16-23 year old lesbians in Newcastle, Liverpool and London.

Across these cities, those interviewed share their experiences of being young lesbians in a heteronormative society. They discuss the various stigmatisations and challenges they face, all the while celebrating all things music and fashion.

The film featuring music by The Mistakes, a feminist pop-rock band from Oxford and Newcastle band Friggin Little Bits (Elaine Drainville, Lesley Nicholson, Maggie Thacker, Pat Garrett) described as:

A 4-piece acoustic band of lesbians ‘writing made-up ditties about life as a lesbian feminist in the North East at a time when the only lesbians anyone had ever heard of were all tennis players (or that rumour about Valerie Singleton and Princess Anne, which of course has long since been discredited…or has it? …’ – Women’s Liberation Music Archive.

Veronica 4 Rose was first produced by the UK’s newly launched TV Company Channel Four.
