Catherine Bertola: Sad Bones: WORKPLACE GATESHEAD

14 September - 19 October 2013

Sad Bones is a collection of interventions into photographs of interiors taken directly from the archives of
Country Life Magazine of buildings that no longer exist. In each case Bertola has carefully set the image
alight allowing the flames to momentarily animate the space as the paper smoulders, leaving behind a
permanent, fragile, and destructive mark on the surface.

Bertola’s practice involves creating installations, objects and drawings that respond to specific sites,
collections and historic contexts. Underpinning the work she makes is a desire to look beyond the surface
of objects and buildings, to uncover forgotten and invisible histories of places and people as a way of
reframing and reconsidering the past.
