Below the Salt: Temple Newsham

4 April - 1 November 2020

Below the Salt is an exhibition of new works by Catherine Bertola at Temple Newsam House, Leeds that was due to open on 4 April. The work is inspired by different aspects of Temple Newsam’s 500-year history, and the extensive decorative arts collection it now contains. Exploring how the house has been occupied by people and objects over the course of it’s history, and how hierarchies have been expressed through the architecture and use of materials within the building, segregating those who lived from those who worked.

A hidden tunnel provided the location for a new film, In the Between Space, that was developed in collaboration with choreographer Gerry Turvey using a soundtrack constructed from recordings of the five working clocks in the house. A series of movements reanimate this narrow, dark and now inactive space, suggesting the constant and repetitive daily movement of people through them, as a way of visualising the cyclical rhythm and flow of this space, and the human labour involved in its past upkeep.

The exhibition runs until 1 Nov, and has been funded by Leeds City Council, Arts Council National Lottery Project Grant. With additional support from: The Northern Film School
