A series of drawings made to reflect on the performance ‘Sticky Weeds’, presented at D6: Culture In Transit, Newcastle in May 2019 to an invited audience of local artists and cultural workers. The performance was an improvised spoken word piece that focused on Singh’s experiences of racialisation as a mixed-race woman of Punjabi and White British parentage, born and brought up in the North East. It aimed to act as leverage for discussion on the responsibility of cultural organisations and communities in relation to racial consciousness in the local art scene.
Nicola has restaged elements of this performance in drawings - returning to the work in the shade of galvanised discourse around UK racism and race relations in the past 12 months specifically, and in response to her own continued research into and personal processing of racial identities and racial consciousness.
