For this new series of works Hughes utilises a standard sheet of A4 paper to work with an equality between the object of the page and his own hand. He says he is working with ‘objects rather than materials’ and in these works the integrity of the A4 sheet is as important as what has been made. Hughes is drawn to the relationship between the shadows cast both within the artwork but also how they draw attention to the shadows cast by the often overlooked sides of the page. In emphasising the shadows, the works look at the very particular quality of light where the artist was working.
