Harriet Sutcliffe - A Performative Lecture: Women Artists of the North East Library

Expanding on the work Harriet Sutcliffe's 'Archival-Constructions' (2018) currently in the exhibition 'Women Artists of the North East Library' at Workplace, Harriet will be giving a performative lecture about her current and ongoing research into the pedagogical developments of the Basic Course at Newcastle University during the 1950’s and 1960s and will be exploring the narrative of the archive.

The library currently holds donations from artists Lesley Kerman and Rose Frain, both of whom have informed Harriet Sutcliffe's research and studied on the Basic Design course. Please join us for an afternoon of conversation and a chance to look through the library. 

Harriet Sutcliffe is an artist and researcher based in Newcastle. Currently she is undertaking a practice-led PhD at Newcastle University investigating ‘The Significance of Space and Form In Art School Pedagogy’. Sutcliffe’s interdisciplinary practice encompasses, sculpture, site- specific installation, collage and drawing. Sitting between perceived disciplinary borders; artistic, curatorial and architectural, her practice uses the freedom of this multidisciplinary approach to question authenticity, authority and the politics of display. Formal architectural devices, close consideration of the context and meticulous archival research are often used in response to existing artwork to initiate a new dialogue between the piece and the audience. Her most recent exhibitions include Re-frame/ Re-model: Reconstructing the archive, Hatton Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne; Fully Awake, Blip Blip Blip, Leeds; and Shortlisted Artist exhibition - Hatton Gallery Offsite commission, The Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne.
