Mick Peter
18 7/8 x 15 in
The source material for these works are collected by Peter from illustration and advertising, the source illustrations always themselves with their origins in drawing and in that regard pre-digital. Some of the illustrations are, or might become, the subject of Peter’s sculpture.
These works are an homage to the broad history of illustration, and an exercise in slowing down and studying what might appear to be gestural, quick, drawings - flattening them into a multi layered object.
Peter is heavily influenced by an intellectual tradition of international Illustrators and Graphic Designers such as Andrzej Klimowski or Tomi Ungerer, who are able to move from children’s illustration and story telling to political satire and philosophically dense graphics with equal weight of endeavour. Peter aspires to the freedom and non-specialism of this nevertheless enlightened vocation, and these works might be viewed as a resistance to the increasingly compartmentalised and stereotypical notion of the artist, and the prevailing market driven ways of making work and achieving career success.
